Sugar Sugar How You Get so Bad?

The brothers host many events throughout the academic year to raise support and awareness for our primary philanthropy, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or JDRF. We have “Sugar Free Wrist Bands”, which is a program where we wear and sell wristbands to promote awareness and raise funds for JDRF. These wristbands resemble the “LIVESTRONG” brand and have always spiked curiosity. We have realized that even such a simple act as wearing a wristband helps contribute to the bigger picture of diabetes awareness. Our longest and most attended events are hosted during our “Diabetes Awareness Week”. During this week we host various events around campus such as sugar-free food tasting, blood sugar testing, a sugar-free bake sale, a charity walk, and an annual charity party. This is a very draining week, but between the combined efforts of the brothers, it has, and will continue to be successful. For those individuals who enjoy sports we host a plethora of charity tournaments. These events include “You Got Served”, an annual charity tennis tournament, “Who’s Got Game”, a charity 3 on 3 basketball tournament, “Sugar Spike Off”, a charity volleyball tournament, and “Dodging Diabetes”, a charity dodge ball tournament, and “Sugar-Free Bowl”, an annual charity flag football tournament. Each year these events rally the support of multiple organizations on and off campus and we feel like we are accomplishing our goal of promoting awareness and donating funds. The philanthropic events that we hold are a great opportunity to reach out to others and spread the cause. As a fraternity, we have donated over $50,000 to the foundation and that amount is continuing to grow with every consecutive year.

With bone marrow being our secondary philanthropy, this past semester we hosted a blood marrow drive in effort to find a match for our sick brother. The drive took place on our campus and over 50 students donated. We were very happy with the turnout and we will continue to host this event in the following years. We believe that with the continuing support of our university that we will find a match for our sick brother. Our chapter is dedicated to donating to the national marrow donor program and promoting awareness.
