Sigma Colony Officially Established

On October 13, 2011 a vision that was set by nine men became a reality. The Sigma Colony of Delta Epsilon Psi was established by nine men at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Together these men brought a powerful and unified South Asian voice and also brought the ideals that were instilled in these men to this college campus. With the principles of brotherhood, disciple, and commitment, these men always do their best to spread the characteristic of leadership into the community as well as fellow students.

With the hard work of the founders of Sigma Colony, the colony expanded to 22 members, each playing an integral role in their recognition process at their university. Prior to their establishment on campus, the interest group expressed their passion to service the international community and organized T-Shirt fundraiser to raise money for the victims of the Japan Earthquake that occurred in 2011. In this event, the young men purchased shirts that were given a discounted price and sold them on campus to students and faculty members. Over a recent period of time, they have worked on creating a strong foundation at their university that will allow them to perpetuate the ideals and principles of Delta Epsilon Psi in the Philadelphia community.  In upcoming weeks, these gentlemen are looking forward to establishing relationships with their fellow Greek organizations by cosponsoring service events and attending events such a their upcoming Greek Unity Mixer.

Together Sigma Colony is dedicated to bringing a larger South Asian presence on University of Sciences campus and becoming more involved with the other Greek and Non-Greek organizations on campus. In the upcoming semester, the brothers are looking to create an immediate impact for our national philanthropy: the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. On November 7th, Sigma Colony will organize Dodging Diabetes, a dodgeball tournament designed to raise funds for JDRF. This event will take place at the University of Sciences Pennsylvania Recreational Center, featuring various organizations coming together to promote awareness for Type 1 Diabetes and enjoying a day full of dodgeball.

They have developed relationships with the American Pharmacists Association and look to get involved with their project, Operation Diabetes. Operation Diabetes is a campaign to raise awareness about diabetes and the dangers associated with it. Their goal is to prove information to the public, making them more knowledgeable about the disease and its symptoms. Their other major goal is to promote the role of pharmacist with glucose screening and monitoring so it promotes pharmaceutical care in the community. Founder Chirag Shah, believes that working with American Pharmacist Association “will be a great experience that will not only allow us to benefit our philanthropy, but also help the brothers gain experiences in working with pharmacists that are active philanthropists in the professional world”.

The establishment of Sigma Colony at the University of Science Pennsylvania is part of the recent and rapid expansion of Delta Epsilon Psi in the Northeast region. Earlier this year, DEPsi granted official an official charter to their Tau Colony, located at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.  Similar to Sigma Colony, Tau Colony has looked to create an immediate impact at their university by organizing “Who’s Got Game”, a charity basketball tournament that raised $1,000 for JDRF. In the upcoming year, they look to continue their efforts by organizing service events such as “Garam Garba” and “Be the Change”. Sigma Colony Founder, Sean Nguyen, believes that the establishment of the Sigma and Tau Colonies “marks a remarkable step in the growth of Delta Epsilon Psi. We look to instill bring our passion for service to our community and create an immediate impact at our universities.
