Raas For A Cure - Philadelphia, PA
On September 24th, 2010, the Xi Colony of Delta Epsilon Psi held a Garba titled “Raas for a Cure” on the campus of Drexel University. The event was a tremendous success, raising over $1400 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in a span of 4 hours. Over 300 students attended the event from all over the Philadelphia area. As our first event for the year, the brothers of Xi Colony truly showed the campus what they were truly about; mixing South Asian culture along with the drive to help the community and raise money for charity.
The event could not have been a success without the help of the sisters of Kappa Phi Gamma, who helped set up the decorations and clean up after the event was over. Additionally, two nationally ranked dance teams performed during the intermission: Drexel Dandiya and the Broad Street Baadshaaz. Providing the right level of entertainment and sound were the DJ’s of M4U Entertainment. Students had the opportunity to meet the new freshmen while dancing the night away with Garba, Raas, Sanedo, and Bhangra. The older Drexel community welcomed the new freshmen with open arms and it was a great way to help the new students adapt to campus life. Even teachers and administrators attended the event and had the opportunity to meet the students and learn more about our South Asian culture.
All in all, the event was one to remember for many years. Students on the campus of Drexel University already are looking forward to next year’s “Raas for a Cure”. Hopefully, the event next year will have an even greater turnout and raise even more money for JDRF. The brothers of Xi Colony anticipate to have an all-Greek Garba next year, bringing out the entire South Asian Greek community and showing unity on our campus.
