Shooting Hoops for a Dream
This year, Kappa Chapter of Delta Epsilon Psi hosted “King of The Court” with Lambda Phi Epsilon. As the name implies, King of the Court was a basketball tournament open for registration to any player, Greek or non-Greek. This was the first collaborative event D.E.Psi had thrown with Lambda Phil Epsilon.
Twelve teams participated in this charity 3-on-3 tournament. The fact that Lambda Phi Epsilon also brought out some teams succeeded in diversifying the nature of this event. This happens to be the first time Kappa Chapter has participated in hosting a charity basketball tournament, but the results were impeccable.
$210 was donated on DEPsi’s behalf to the charitable organization SOFKIN. SOFKIN is a not for profit organization that assists in developing and raising underprivileged children that need basic access to human needs such as food, water, books and shelter. $210 was an ample amount considering the profits were split between two organizations. Perhaps the most important aspect of this tournament, was acknowledging its charitable aura and at the same time building relationships with people over the very same concept. The Lambda’s were extremely helpful and very easy to work with throughout the course of the event. Niketan Avani organized the event on D.E.Psi’s behalf. Avani remarked “To be perfectly honest, I never thought we would actually throw a basketball tournament with Lambda Phi Epsilon. But when we did, I realized how similar our goals and views are and decided we could not squander this opportunity.” As tournaments are classically conducted, each team had a chance to play twice since it was double elimination. This gave every team a fighting chance to stay alive in the tournament. Some of the Greek attendees included Sigma Lambda Beta and Beta Chi Theta.
The current year has signified transcendence for Kappa Chapter.“King of the Court” is the first of hopefully many successful events that we will throw. Every waking moment we spend on our community is benefiting a member our own kin or those that are less fortunate than us. The president of Kappa Chapter, Jigesh Patel, was proud of the success that a small scale event was able to have. “The fact that a simple basketball tournament in the name of charity could reach out to our fellow college students makes me confident in believing that a grand scale event would be no problem to throw here at Rutgers University.”
