Football for a Fight against Diabetes

This semester at Delta Epsilon Psi’s Alpha Alpha Colony at the University of Georgia we hosted our very first Sugar Free Bowl. The Sugar Free Bowl has been a part Delta Epsilon Psi’s rich history for several years now and is continually growing each and every year. This prestigious event is a charity flag football tournament hosted by brothers across the nation whose sole purpose is to raise awareness for and help fight Juvenile Diabetes.

The Sugar Free Bowl is the first event of its kind in the state of Georgia. We were able to receive a tremendous amount of support from not only the local residents from the city of Athens, Ga but also support from individuals all throughout the state of Georgia. This event was completely foreign to the residents of Athens, Ga and the brothers of Delta Epsilon Psi wanted to introduce this tradition to the community. The brothers of Alpha Alpha Colony were determined at throwing their first annual Sugar Free Bowl and with hard work and help from not only local businesses but local residents as well, we were successfully able to donate three thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help in their fight to find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes.

Our first Sugar Free Bowl helped to unite and strengthen the brotherhood we have amongst ourselves within our fraternity. Our brothers relied heavily on one another as we made our preparations for our first Sugar Free Bowl. This event brought us closer together and helped to solidify our brotherhood. This accomplishment is truly indicative of our motto, “In Brotherhood Lies our Strength.” Without the countless hours of hard work and dedication from our brothers, this feet would not have been possible.

As we look into the future we wish to continue to build off of our early success and make next year’s Sugar Free Bowl all the more successful. Even though we had an excellent turn out of upwards of 150 people, we felt as a colony that we could improve on this turnout for future Sugar Free Bowls. We wanted to see more participation from local Greek organizations here at the University of Georgia. Even though several Greek organizations participated in our event, we feel as though next year we can incorporate more Greek organizations into our tournament by spreading the word out in a timelier manner. We also want to focus next year on bringing more attendance and participation from throughout the entire state of Georgia. This year we were blessed to have a tremendous amount of support from the residents of the entire state of Georgia. We want to expand upon our success and hopefully bring in more teams from the entire state of Georgia for next year’s Sugar Free Bowl as well as more attendees. Overall the Sugar Free Bowl was a tremendous success and we look forward to building upon this year’s success in the future.
