The Greek Experience
Nothing makes a social gathering more complete more than a plethora of different cuisines and the opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds. So when the United Greek Council (UGC) at the University of Texas at Dallas got together and organized a potluck in order to raise awareness between the chapters on Wednesday, March 23rd , 2011, the result was a splendid array of home-cooked traditional foods on display and a lot of fun memories to remember.
The UGC at our university is relatively newer and therefore consists of only four organizations. Apart from us, there are the brothers of Lambda Phi Epsilon and Omega Delta Phi and the ladies from Sigma Lambda Alpha. But it truly is a diverse mix of cultures brought together under the Greek umbrella.
As you could most likely guess, Delta Epsilon Psi’s contribution to the potluck resulted in a lot of people getting some messy fingers and running for water. Apart from the ever popular chicken biryani cooked by one of our brothers, we also brought some naan and beef curry, that turned out to be a little too spicy for our acquaintances at the dinner. There were also some traditional Mexican dishes on display, like cheese enchiladas, chicken fajitas and Frijoles Negroes which is a kind of black beans. We also had some Chinese fried rice and tofu coming from our Asian counterparts. All in all it was a real dazzling array of various cuisines, but what made the night totally memorable was the exchange of various spring break stories and getting to meet each organization’s new members.
Most of March though from a fraternal viewpoint, has been dedicated to making our first annual “Dash for Diabetes”, a run designed to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes. Our whole active body has worked tirelessly under the sharp guidance of our executive board and we have been striving for a successful event. Throwing a run of such magnitude has not been done in Beta Chapter history, and come this Saturday, April 9th, all of our semester’s hard work will come into effect.
Everyone strives for the ultimate Greek experience when they decide to come to our booth during rush week. Holding multicultural events such like an intra-council potluck can really be successful in achieving just that.
