Surging Confidence
I grew up with a fear of public speaking, the number one most feared thing by humans in society. I had an impediment; I stuttered when giving presentations, reading in class, or even meeting new people. Yet, I was still an outgoing person that loved to be social. After crossing into Delta Epsilon Psi, I changed as a person. I saw a surge of confidence rise into myself. No longer was I an extrovert with an inside fear of people noticing my impediment. Instead, I was still an extrovert that was able to get out of his comfort zone and enjoy meeting new people without thinking of my greatest fear.
Recently, I was nominated as social chair for the colony. I was excited for this position because I knew it was my chance to go out on campus to meet and greet other Greek members in fraternities and sororities. Attending presents for Kappa Phi Gamma Sorority Inc. and Alpha Sigma Rho Sorority Inc., I knew I would have to give a speech in front of many people in order to congratulate the new sisters that crossed. If I were to give this speech before crossing into the fraternity, I surely would have been frozen from the stage fright; but in this moment, I was cool, calm, collected, and confident. I gave my speech with no problems. It is from these experiences that will help me grow as a person. Moreover, I can stand up for myself a lot more now. When I feel like something is not right, I am not afraid to voice my opinion and share my thoughts. Furthermore, confidence is vital for any person wishing to succeed.
As I hope to enter medical school and become a doctor, confidence will determine the quality of care I will give to my patients. No patients want a doctor that is unsure of his own ability. Confidence in a doctor is what allows a patient to trust and confide in his or her doctor. Medicine not only consists of precision and accuracy but also a social environment that is dependent on physician and patient interaction. I believe I now have the confidence that I never had before to be successful in many aspects of life, whether it involves singing, dancing, or simply just doing well in school. The confidence I gained after crossing into Delta Epsilon Psi is something I would have never have obtained elsewhere. Delta Epsilon Psi serves not only as a fraternity but also as a life lesson. The brothers that I have grew so attached to help to instill confidence within me. However, confidence was only one the many critical things I have taken away from this fraternity. Nonetheless, I envision a bright future ahead of me now, and I plan to succeed and grow as a person by using the confidence that I gained.
