Delta State of Mind

Fraternity. The word alone makes me think of reckless parties and gross houses. But Delta Epsilon Psi is different. I did not entirely realize this until I pledged, however. To be honest, I did not completely know what I was getting myself into when I initiated pledging as a member of a Founding Class. The second after crossing, I know I made the right decision.

Delta Epsilon Psi’s mission statement says enough, that it is “a fraternity whose primary purpose is to instill Brotherhood, Discipline, and Commitment within its members.” After some time pledging and working as an active brother, I realized that this fraternity does fulfill its mission statement by instilling its three pillars within its members.

As part of a founding line, I was already close with my line brothers before pledging, but I learned what it meant to be able to call them my family throughout the process. We were together through everything – thick and thin, good and bad. After we crossed, we continued to work together, attempting to start up our own colony of this fraternity. When one brother would be busy with school, another would pick up the workload of the fraternity to make sure all of the work was completed. We look forward to accepting new members, just so we can share this strong brotherhood with them.

Discipline is just as apparent in each of us as the brotherhood is. I learned how to manage my time and focus on my goals. I know my priorities and am able to work toward them. For example, during my busy semester of starting this fraternity, I earned my highest GPA thus far in college. When working on fraternity affairs, I was focused and did so efficiently, and similarly, when doing school work, I worried about nothing else, except working as best as I can. Also, my parents noticed this change within me as well and became prouder than ever of me.

Along with brotherhood and discipline, we learned commitment. I, just like most other people, have experienced instances in which I have not seen a project to completion. However, this fraternity taught me to be committed to all of the endeavors that I tackle. Not only did I see pledging to the finish, but I am sure I will be helping my colony even after graduation, just to make sure it is on the right track.

Brotherhood, Discipline, and Commitment – three essential qualities have been instilled in each and every one of us through Delta Epsilon Psi. I gained brotherhood with my own line brothers and on a national scale. I gained discipline and became better at accomplishing my goals. And my commitment is shown through my ability to follow things through completion.
