The Beginning of a Legacy

These past few months have made up the most prominent semester for Delta Epsilon Psi at the University of Florida.  At the end of fall 2010, we were officially recognized by the Multi-Cultural Greek Council here at UF, and started to get our name out this spring.  The whole process has been an incredible experience from learning how everything works to throwing incredible service events.

It most certainly was not an easy path though.  We had spent countless hours preparing for our presentation to the council, everything from organizing a power point to making presentation booklets.  It finally paid off when we were accepted in November.

In the spring we made sure to get our name out the campus right away by making new rush boards and information boards, and tabling on a daily basis.  We met many new people and built better relationships with other Greeks through this.  Our first service event that we held was Moe’s Fundraiser where 15% of all purchases during an allotted 6 hours was given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  It turned out to be very successful as the manager said it was one of the biggest turnouts that he had ever had.

In addition we held a blood and bone marrow drive with alpha Kappa Delta Phi which quickly turned out to be one of the biggest blood and bone marrow drives at UF. We nearly filled up the entire room with people who were willing to donate blood or marrow if needed.  As great as these two events were, our greatest success came through our 5-On-5 Charity Basketball Tournament.  This tournament comprised of 12 teams, brought out more than 90 players, and well over 100 spectators.  We raised over $800 through the competition, and although a lot of that money went to the costs of the tournament, we plan to make this an annual event and increase the profit margin each time.  Again, everything that we have done has been a huge learning experience for us, but we all of our events have been very successful despite us being so new to doing them.

Next year we will continue our efforts to improve on any mistakes that we have made and make our service events better and more appealing to the public.  In addition we will continue to show support to the Greek community, and build better relationships with other organizations by attending more of their events or hosting events along with them.
