A Lasting Memory

People seem to think that the memories one makes during college involve drinking, partying and taking advantage of newfound freedom.  I used to have this mindset until I became a brother of Delta Epsilon Psi.  It all started with me thinking back on my college career at Drexel and pondering about all the great things I had done.  Hanging out with friends and being a college kid was definitely a memorable experience but it was something that I was beginning to forget.  I was yearning for something more memorable than house parties and watching movies.  I wanted to make an impact in my school and community so people will remember me. That is when I started thinking about Delta Epsilon Psi.  I hoped that it could unlock my potential and help me make a difference for a good cause.  Boy, did I make the right decision!

As a brother today, Delta Epsilon Psi has imprinted a mark on me just from service alone.  One would think that something as miniscule as a service event would not really be a memorable experience.  However, being woken up by your service chair at 7:30 in the morning and gathering all brothers for the service event is a special memory of its own.  I can remember all of us packing into two cars to go to a service event.  Some of us are half asleep; yet, everyone is still here and ready to help those in need.

This specific service event entailed us packaging pies to be given out to the homeless.  I still remember all the goofy things that we did like picking on the neophytes and just having fun.  There was something different and special with what I was doing.  We all got together that Saturday morning to solely help those in need while still having fun.  At that point, I started to realize the power a brotherhood has.  The memories that I will remember and cherish are the ones where I use my time to help those that are less unfortunate with the people that I love.  I was beginning to find purpose with my life in college.

The best part was the ride back when we got to stop at IHOP and just have breakfast together on that crisp sunny Saturday.  A friendship like this is hard to come by in college especially when a lot of kids experience parties for the first time. It is difficult to find people that share the same ideals as you.  Who would be willing to sacrifice their Saturday morning to service? Thanks to Delta, I have found a foundation to push my limits and build memories that last.
