Learning to Lead by Example

Joining Delta Epsilon Psi has been the greatest life changing moment in my life thus far.  My name is Neil Patel and I joined Delta Epsilon Psi in the fall semester of 2010. Joining the organization has allowed me to witness the true complexity in operating an organization. The moment I joined Delta Epsilon Psi I had big shoes to fill, my big brother Yathu Suthakaran is the current president of Theta Chapter. My line brothers and I were immediately encouraged to take leadership positions within the fraternity by all the active and inactive brothers at Theta Chapter. We immediately responded by taking over all seven chair positions. As historian I quickly learned the larger responsibilities of the position other than simply taking pictures. Apart from recording videos and taking pictures, I learned there exists a larger role in organizing, distributing, and creating innovative ways to record the history of our fraternity and chapter.

The brothers at Theta chapter continuously encourage all active members to take up leadership positions within the chapter, fraternity, and Greek council. Several graduated brothers took early initiative in taking leadership positions on campus not only within the fraternity but also outside the fraternity. As a neo I am able to witness the tremendous success of these individuals and the organizations they have led. Their continuous encouragement and willingness to teach my line brothers and me will not only benefit the chapter and fraternity but will also benefit us.

Helping organize social events such as Cakin’ with DEPsi and LTA’s and larger events such as Sugar Free Bowl have allowed me to learn the work and dedication it takes to be a leader. It truly is a group effort that splits several jobs; by following more experienced people I learned the larger responsibilities of all executive board positions. I also learned that all these positions must work eloquently to ensure the success of these events. As my line brothers and I move towards taking larger responsibilities as leaders we are extremely grateful for joining a fraternity full of excellent leaders and teachers that thrive for nothing but the best.
