The Right Fraternity For The Right Reasons

After crossing into Delta Epsilon Psi, I started to ask myself if I made the right decision joining this fraternity. This is because I wasn’t sure if I joined the fraternity for the right reasons. I knew that I was certainly influenced by my peers and the prestige of being a brother, but, I also knew that my duties as member would soon undermine these motives.  However, I soon came to realize that these duties would lead me to have experiences that I never would’ve imagined.  It was these experiences that would eventually affect my approach to academics, social networking and leadership.

My approach to academics changed rapidly as my duties as a brother became more and more demanding.  Since I was required to attend several volunteering and fundraising events every month, I needed to learn how to prioritize effectively, both inside and outside of the classroom, so as to not fall behind on my coursework.  This discipline in time-management, ultimately, transcended into many other aspects of my life and allowed me to set a wider range of goals for myself.

In addition, I was required to participate in fraternity events that were held in conjunction with other student organizations on campus.  Aside from the immense leadership training, these events exposed me to a diverse social network which enabled me to understand the value that making connections has on meeting the goals of Delta Epsilon Psi.

My fellow brothers have also had a very positive influence on me and I learned that each and every one of them has something different to offer.  In spite of these differences, they all hold a common sense of pride for the fraternity. For example, I once participated in a service event dedicated to a fellow brother with cancer. This was the first time I experienced this commitment to the brotherhood and the brothers’ transparency immediately instilled the same sense of loyalty in me. Ultimately, this loyalty has given me a bigger sense of purpose and a mission for succeeding not only as a member of Delta Epsilon Psi, but, also in my professional endeavors.
