Austin, TX- November 9, 2007- The Delta Epsilon Psi Fraternity will host the 5th Annual Sugar Free Bowl (SFB), a city-wide flag football tournament to raise awareness for juvenile diabetes on Saturday, November 17. The event is in honor of fraternity alumnus Vishal Bhagat, who had juvenile diabetes and died last year at the age of 25. The donation ceremony for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will include speeches from Solomon Ortiz, Jr., Texas State Representative and Dr. Gregory Vincent, Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement at the University of Texas at Austin.
JDRF is striving to find a cure through research for a disease that affects 17 million Americans and 150 million people worldwide. Diabetes kills one American every three minutes and a new case is diagnosed every 40 seconds. Individuals afflicted with juvenile diabetes must constantly monitor and stabilize their insulin levels.
At the donation ceremony, the Vishal Bhagat Foundation will present $43,000 to JDRF. Bhagat started the Sugar Free Bowl when he was a member of Delta Epsilon Psi in 2003. The fraternity then helped create a foundation in Bhagat’s memory and to increase awareness about juvenile diabetes.
The donation ceremony will be held at UT-Austin’s Whitaker Fields at Guadalupe and 51st Street beginning at 2:00 pm. Over thirty teams will compete in three divisions for the Sugar-Free Bowl Cup and cash prizes. Last year, approximately 500 people were in attendance, and greater participation is anticipated this year.
